Raymond J. Huss, 89, of Faulkton, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the Faulkton Healthcare Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 16, 2012 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Faulkton with Fr. Joji Itukulapati officiating.  Burial followed at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Faulkton.  Visitation was held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Raymond Joseph Huss, son of Theodore and Anna (Klein) Huss, was born on November 22, 1922, at Faulkton, SD. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School in Zell, SD and graduated from Orient High School in 1941. Raymond stayed home rather than join the military as he had two brothers and one sister already in the Armed Forces. He was needed at home to help with the farm. After graduation he farmed from 1941 to 1956 with his father.  He married Phyllis Miesen on September 20, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Zell.  In January of 1950, the original Huss home burned to the ground in below zero temperatures. A new house was build immediately. In 1956, they purchased the farm from Ted and Ann and in 1967 purchased the adjoining Frank Swope farm. Raymond belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Orient for many years and currently of St. Thomas in Faulkton.

As his father before him, Ray was on the Orient Township Board as treasurer. He served from 1949-1975. He was also on the Orient School Board, was a member of the Lakeside County Club and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Raymond overall enjoyed being involved in the communities of Orient and Faulkton, helping out any chance he was given.

Ray and Phyllis moved to Faulkton in 1975, but Ray continued working on the farm until the 1990’s. During Ray’s retirement years he spent his time greeting friends everyday at the Vogel/BerMac station with a cup of coffee for which of course he was willing to shake the dice to see who would buy. You could also find him traveling through Faulkton and area counties touring in his “Cityboy” pickup.

Ray loved all aspects of his life on the farm and was so proud of what he had added to the original homestead during his time. He was also appreciative of the fact that the Huss farm is now in its fourth generation. Ray had been given many names over the years including Raymond (Phyllis’ favorite), R.J., Sonny and Cityboy; but most of all he loved being called Dad and Grandpa Ray!

Raymond is survived by two sons: Chuck (Sharon) Huss and Craig (Becky) Huss of Faulkton, SD; one daughter, Cheryl (Tim) Dewald of Bowdle, SD; two brothers: Leo (Connie) and Kenny (Lorraine) of Faulkton; two sisters: Irene Cordts of Faulkton and Verna Sturdevant of Brookings, SD; sister-in-law: Dorothy Huss of Faulkton; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 1998; his father in 1974 and his mother in 1975, two brothers: Clarence and Cyril and two sisters: Marcella O’Meara and Billie Bowar.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Jason Huss, Jeff Huss, Ben Dewald, Chris Simon, Glen Kaup, and Kevin Deiter.

Offertory will be given by Raymond’s granddaughters: Carrie Deiter, Jennifer Simon, Michelle Huss, Jamie Kaup, Jill Dewald, Jami Huss, and Dongi Huss.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Raymond’s arrangements.
